Tuesday starts the 40 day countdown

OK--so, I've got a bunch of planned firsts for my 40 days to 40 celebration. Some of those include:

Getting a tattoo in the next week (thanks to Jesse for the design)
Going to a pocket book/bag sale with products created by women in shelters
Going to a formal hosted at a friend's house
Hosting a coffee house music festival fundraiser
Preparing a gourmet meal next weekend
Welding a ring with Rebecca next week
Caving with Tim in 2 weeks

I'm still plotting several ideas including:
Skydiving
Creating pottery
Brewing beer
Eating kangaroo
Hiking in Maryland

I need some more ideas...and I'd love for others to join me in what I'm doing. So, if you've got something you'd like to join me in or a new idea--please let me know ASAP! I really need to get a couple of things planned for the first 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday)--I've got Thursday through Monday scheduled with activities.

Look for daily blog posts beginning on Tuesday where I'll tell stories of my experiences and hopefully some photos as well!

  1. Ideas for turning 4-0 or “things I’ve never done before”:

Go drag. You’re sure to meet some fun people! (I might have connections if you’re interested)

Carve something out of something you find in a forest (preferably something you can proudly display in your house)

    Drive backwards up an off-ramp.

Create a slip and slide in a public place where it has never been done before.

Climb a tree every day? Or plant one.

Convince someone to donate to a cause you don’t support.

    Spelunking.

    Have you taken voice lessons?

Related to your hiking thing, I recently saw someone driving a remote-controlled car along some rocky paths in the woods. I think you should create some type of vehicle to take on a hike with you.

    Horse-back tag.

    Sing with penguins.

Eat breakfast for 40 days in a row.

    Write to an estranged relative.

    Record a song.

Go off-roading. On a couple different terrains.

Sleep 40 hours in a row? I take that one back. It sounds terrible.

Make a green space somewhere in the city.

Ask a kid to tell you the 40 most important lessons they’ve ever learned.

Hang-gliding. But I don’t think there is anywhere close to do it.

    Sail-plane ride.

Ride an animal you never have before.

    Witness a tornado.

    Take a flight lesson.

Hang out with people who were 40 at least 40 years ago. Ask them for ideas too! : )

and to close it off, a quote:

So, friends, every day do something
that won't compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.
    Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
    republic for which it stands.
Give your approval to all you cannot
understand. Praise ignorance, for what man
has not encountered he has not destroyed.

-from Wendell Berry's poem "The Mad Farmer Liberation Front"

  2. This sounds challenging, since firsts require that you plan and purchase many items that one normally does not have. Good luck, i'll be interested to follow perhaps I can try it in 2.5 years.

Would it be a first to create a website and blogspot page for someone you know? I could use some help!

How about making a shirt, maybe a silk screen or for a challenge a fitted shirt.

    have fun!

  3. Hey Kristin--it's not as hard as you think--nor that expensive--several folks are even paying for the things they suggest we do together. Others, of course are a bit costly, like skydiving.

On the website side of things...blogspot does it for you--just click buttons and type. Or if you have a mac, iWeb does it for you with templates as well. Good luck!!

    thanks for the ideas!

  4. Scott Burkholder recommend that I talk to you. I'm a local artist working on one of the world's longest murals, right here in Baltimore. Ever paint a mural? I'm in my last week of the project and could use a hand if you're interested.

  5. MI - I think someone suggested you sleep outside in Baltimore City... I have always wanted to sleep outside in Bmore, so I would be up for it a not-too-cold night (I'm sort of a wimp with cold weather) if you're interested. I'll follow with an email.

Love the blog and the adventure. I'm impressed with the tat, like the ideas you incorporated.

Just a thought, if you are still looking for ideas. What do you think about babysitting our four girl for the evening, 10 to 3. Maybe not an exciting adventure, but educational and humbling. Either way, enjoy the ride through the end of your 40th year.

    Hope to see you soon
